Here we are sharing 6 steps that are involved in the process of Infrared Asphalt Patching Toronto.
#STEP 1: Clean the area
Firstly, the affected area will be CLEANED with powerful blowers to get rid the space of any loose aggregate, sand or water. Then, the infrared panel is lowered to the position just above the pavement.
NOTE: The heated area (6x8) is larger than the area to be repaired (5x7). This is done so because there are no cold spots and no seams.
#STEP 2: Heating up
Secondly, infrared heater is placed over the damaged area to be repaired. We HEAT the asphalt with the right temperature using infrared light which penetrates the asphalt surface heating it to a working temperature of 300-350 degrees for 10 -15 minutes. The heat of the infrared light melts your cracked and broken asphalt into a soft, molten state.
#STEP 3: Add New/ Recycled Asphalt
After that, we need to SHOVEL the damaged area removing the 1/ 4” of deteriorated asphalt with proper amount of new asphalt. We then use the rake lines to scarify the asphalt as deep as possible within the framed area. Then, we try to tap the edges around the pavement which ensures a good bond between the new and old areas.
#STEP 4: Rejuvenating
Then, we apply a highly specialized REJUVENATOR on the existing asphalt to MIX the new asphalt with the old asphalt. Rejuvenators are used to restore lost fine oils of the asphalt cement that are oxidized out of the material over its life time or during the process of infrared asphalt patching.
#STEP 5: Leveling
The asphalt is LEVELED with an asphalt lute to achieve the desired grade.
#STEP 5: Compaction
Lastly, we need a compactor or vibratory roller to get the maximum density in the new patch. Before compaction, we “pinch” the outer 3” of the perimeter with the full weight of the roller. This is the “SECRET SAUCE” that gives us a seamless repair. Once the “pinch” is completed we vibratory roll the entire area in both directions.
#STEP 6: A Thermal Bonded Repair is finished
In less than 30 minutes your pothole repair has been replaced with a LONG LASTING newly paved surface.
